Water Weeds
Ponds and streams add a great deal of interest to the countryside and have their own weed populations. Ponds without weeds are lifeless – although having said that, there are one or two exotic species of water weed that are undesirable because they tend to choke out the native vegetation and change the habitat. Some, such as Australian swamp stonecrop, used to be sold by nurseries but it is now illegal to supply them. One of the Lime Tree ponds is currently infested with this weed, and the advice is to fill in the pond and start again.
Aquatic weeds are often spread by waterfowl, so new ponds will soon acquire their own flora, for good or ill.
